Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an innovative teeth alignment system that uses clear plastic aligner trays to shift teeth into optimal positioning. An alternative to traditional metal braces, Invisalign can give you the smile of your dreams without having to live with a gleaming metallic smile.

Many people choose Invisalign for its aesthetic appeal. The clear plastic used to craft your aligners makes it hard for anyone to notice you’re wearing them. That can help you feel more confident in work or social settings, where metal braces might not convey the imaging you’re trying to present.

There are also dental health reasons to choose Invisalign. Metal brackets and wires tend to trap food particles and provide lots of hiding spaces for plaque and bacteria. Invisalign trays are completely removable, allowing you to brush and floss normally.

What kinds of alignment issues can Invisalign treat?

Invisalign can correct many of the same issues as traditional metal braces. Some examples of treatable cases include:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Cross bite
  • Open bite
  • Gapped teeth
  • General misalignment
  • Mix of permanent and baby teeth

There are some cases where metal braces offer a better fit. Because metal braces are affixed to your teeth, they can create certain forces that aligner trays cannot replicate. You’ll learn if Invisalign is right for you during your initial visit.

What is it like to go through Invisalign treatment?

The planning stage for Invisalign involves using an intraoral digital scanner to gather data on the exact size, shape, and placement of your teeth. It also creates imaging of the underlying bone structure.

All of that information is fed into the proprietary Invisalign software. The software creates your customized treatment plan and guides the fabrication of your aligner trays.

Once your first set of trays arrive from the lab, you’ll come back to Laguna Vista Dental to learn how to put them in and take them out. You’ll wear your aligners around the clock, removing them only while eating and drinking or when performing your dental hygiene routines.

You’ll periodically return to the office for progress checks, at which time your treatment plan can be adjusted if needed.
